How much do you desire it?

A few months ago I got to the conclusion that depending on how much you desire something, the chances of you getting that particular thing may increase or decrease.

I mainly realized this around last year after purchasing the computer I am using now to write this article. It’s pretty good and it cost me a lot of money. I had to work a lot for it and sacrifice a lot of sleep to get it.

Before having this computer however, I had a really old one, from 2007, with a dual core CPU, 2GB of RAM and a 512mb Video Card. I was barely able to open two apps at the same time, I could barely play anything and I could never even try to learn how to use something like Blender or Unity because none of them would even open.

I really wanted a new computer. I desired a new computer. And I was obsessed with the idea of having one good enough to be able to do whatever I wanted on it.

As I said, after a lot of work and a lot of saving, I finally got what I so much wanted.

But after the purchase was done, and after I spent a few months with this computer, my desire to work more and have more money kinda diminished. I wasn’t in the mood to work any more. I finally had what I always wanted and I was left with no goal.

I mean, sure, I still wanted certain things, like to move and to stay in a new city. But I didn’t desire those things. I just thought it would be nice to live somewhere else.

So, I spent a big part of 2018 working and trying new things, in an attempt to get all that motivation back. I was still working and making quite a lot of progress, but I wasn’t exactly excited about it. It became a habit at that point.

Around two months ago however, I stumbled upon an interesting video on YouTube about a small but really nice apartment. Here’s the link to the video, in case you’re interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3yHLikvjPU

I fell in love with that kind of space, with the idea of having a small apartment or house that could have everything I needed without occupying a lot of space. I always wanted a small place for myself, but I never desired one, until I found that video and I realized what I could do with it.

And that’s when my motivation came back. That’s when my desire to work grew again, and was as big as it was a year ago when I decided I really wanted a new computer.

It motivated me to work more and to even start learning how to code websites once again. I already made quite a lot of progress in only a few weeks, and who knows, if I get good enough, I may even get a job as a web developer in the future.

The desire to get something helped me get back the motivation I needed to work towards my goal. Discipline helped a lot too, and my love for what I do was just as important. But desire is what ultimately filled my soul with intention, motivation and will to work.

So, now I ask you — how much do you desire it? How much would you like to achieve that goal you thought about for so long? Do you really want what you are working towards, or is it simply something you’d like to have?

Desiring something may be what you need to get the motivation required to move to the next step. It may be what you need to motivate you to learn a new skill, or get a new job. It may be what could help you follow your dreams.

That’s why it may be a good idea to focus a little on what you desire, and to take care of that feeling. You never know how wanting something really bad could be what helps you do whatever’s needed to get that thing.
