Diversity as a means to get unstuck

I’ve been working on creative fields for as long as I know, mostly as a freelancer.

I started with video editing and graphic design, moved to web design and writing, then to programming and finally to 3D modelling.

I’ve been doing all kind of things and it’s been almost always fun.

The worst part about working in creative fields, any creative field, is that one way or another, you will get stuck at some point, and when you do, it’s hard to get unstuck.

Even if you do, you will get to a point, if you created too much, in which you’re not satisfied with anything.

All your ideas seem dull and boring, and you become more and more frustrated because you can’t seem to find the right thing to work on.

When that happens, there’s one thing I used to do, something I recently realized it became an unconscious thing rather than an active process.

That thing is trying to diversify my thinking, or my activities.

When I can’t seem to get an idea for anything I do at the moment, I start thinking about completely different activities.

If I can’t write I think about coding, or about design, or about 3D modelling.

If I can’t model anything, I think about writing, or I start to read.

If I can’t come up with anything regardless of what I do, I watch a movie.

Allowing your mind to wander without restrictions can usually result in really good ideas.

I come up with the idea for this post by thinking about 3D modelling, after I’ve been struggling to write something for around 15 minutes.

I’m sure that I’ll come up with an idea for something completely different while writing this post, and then another idea while working on the one I got, and so on.

It’s a never-ending process that continues to get me out of all the moments when I’m stuck.

I might be something that could help you too, if you give it a try.
